Development of fundamental principles of operational examination system of human cardiovascular system for children, teenagers and working people
Financed with the aid of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia.
Project status:
Finished
Partners:
- Work and Environment Health Institute of the Riga Stradins University
- Institute of Cardiology of the University of Latvias
Goal:
The main goal of the project was to execute all necessary research work in order to develop an operational examination system of human cardiovascular system for children, teenagers and working people that would be scientifically grounded and based on technical research.
Results and conclusions:
- Screening of pupils and teenagers based on ECG, blood pressure, pulse and physiological data is acknowledgeable as productive method of screening.
- The use of DP-EKG-1 portable electrocardiograph is recommended.
- 1-channel electrocardiograph is not recommended to be used for prophylactic adult ECG recordings.
- Screening methodology based on performance of cardiovascular monitoring in health centres at schools is recommended as prophylactic examinations.
- The established departures from the norm (based on the age group) of hearts electrical activity (9,3%) and blood pressure (4,82%) have to be evaluated as significant.
- The results of the screening in context with current epidemiological data are serious warning signal that there is a need to develop complex primary prophylactic method for monitoring cardiovascular system of children and teenagers on national level.
Prophylactic examination of children and teenagers in Latvia
Financed with the aid of the Charity Fund of the Rietumu Bank.
Project status:
Finished
Partners:
- Institute of Cardiology of the University of Latvia
Goals:
- Using the experience accumulated by all involved specialists in investigation of children and teenagers illnesses, perform early diagnostics of cardiovascular problems for 3 700 pupils in Riga.
- To select a risk group (according to special knowledge of scientists in the field of cardiovascular diseases) whose rejections will establish departures from the norm.
- To improve general knowledge on disturbances of children and teenager cardiovascular system, pathologies and their diagnostic possibilities.
Results and conclusions:
- During the project realization, all involved medical centres of Latvian schools were linked in one network and on the basis of measurements accumulated in the database statistical information on children's health status was acquired.
- The departures from the norm were established for7,4 % of inspected pupils.
- There will be a possibility to single out high, medium and low risk groups of persons with blood circulation system diseases and to adopt a decision on further actions, for example, a repeated examination, cardiologist's consultation.
- A system of monitoring will be introduced into the existing health system and it is based on true dynamic information on every concrete individual's heart and blood vessel condition. Moreover, data will be accumulated in one database and will be accessible to both: every concrete individual's medical care personnel and medical branch scientists who are performing research work.
- In future the elaborated monitoring system used in health centres of Latvian schools will allow to process not only data on cardiologic examinations but also data on disorders of the outer breathing function (especially early diagnostics of asthma), data on glucose levels in the blood, etc.
Prophylactic examination of children and teenagers in Latvia

Project status:
Finished
Partners:
- Institute of Cardiology of the University of Latvia
Goals:
- To carry out situation analysis concerning children and teenager cardiovascular diseases and to develop methodology for operative heart system’s examination.
- Using the experience accumulated by all involved specialists in investigation of children and teenagers illnesses, diagnose heart disease problems in an early stage in one of the Latvian schools (Pumpuri Secondary School).
Results:
- Testing and pilot model experimental approbation of the elaborated data processing system in school. Analysis of children's measurements and development of recommendations.
- Aggregation and analysis of results that showed following results: disorders of heart and blood circulation system were found in 81 cases of total performed ECG - 523, that composes 15.4%.
